Vote for the new 7 world wonders

The Taj Mahal might be declared a wonder of the world, thanks to the New7Wonders Foundation—a privately funded organisation that has put forward a shortlist of 21 landmarks from across the globe.

According to New7wonders.com, the website of the organisers of the campaign to shortlist the new seven wonders of the world, votes polled so far place the Taj among the top seven.

Bipasha Basu will host the global show for the New Seven Wonders of the World on 7th July at the Benfica Stadium in London. She will co-host the show along with Oscar winners Ben Kingsley and Hillary Swank to announce the New Wonders which have been selected by global voting for the first time ever.

Bipasha is ecstatic about this opportunity as she thinks it's an honour to be a part of history. But for this event, she has agreed to wear contact lenses for her bad eyesight which otherwise she is reluctant to wear.

Meanwhile, the global event will have performances from pop diva Jennifer Lopez, Spanish Ballet Dancer Joaquin Cortes, American Singer Chaka Khan and Italian singer Alessandro Safina among others.

Let's hope Bipasha's presence proves lucky for our only Indian contender - The Taj Mahal

The New7Wonders Foundation, the body behind the New7Wonders campaign, made the announcement on January 31. The final nominations for new wonders of the world will be announced at a official declaration ceremony at Lisbon in Portugal on July 7.

The Colosseum, the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu, Petra, the Pyramids of Giza and the statues of Eastern Island are among the other wonders that have made it to the top slot.

In order to check out the nominations first hand and to popularise the voting campaign, the New7wonders team has organised a world tour. As part of a tour, a hi-tech New7Wonders airship had soared over the marvel in white marble on December 5, 2006.

"Taj has been ranked for its beauty, purity and white ancient marble. I think its a celebration of what India has to offer to the world," founder of the New Seven Wonders Foundation Bernard Weber had said on his visit.

The Taj Mahal was built on the orders of Shah Jahan to honour the memory of his beloved late wife.

Built out of white marble, the Taj is regarded as the most perfect jewel of Muslim art in India. It is said that when he was later jailed, Shah Jahan could see the Taj Mahal from the window of his small cell.
